Rhode Island is leading the nation’s pursuit of offshore wind power, according to a recent report by the National Wildlife Federation.

“By every measure, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are clearly leading America’s pursuit of offshore wind power,” the report reportedly says. “Both states have shown considerable leadership to date in spurring offshore wind development – efforts which are poised to pay off as the nation’s first projects begin construction off their shores in the coming year.”

Deepwater’s 30MW Block Island Wind Farm, consisting of five turbines, will be located approximately 3 miles southeast of Block Island, about 13 miles south of Rhode Island’s coast. The company says the project will create 200 jobs during construction, which is expected to begin in 2015.

The completed wind farm will generate more than 125,000MWh annually, enough to power more than 17,000 homes, according to Deepwater. A 21-mile, bi-directional submarine cable will export power to the mainland electric grid. In total, Deepwater expects to invest more than $250 million on the wind and transmission system…………..
