Blade Dynamics announces work is to commence on prototype of new lightweight wind turbine blade design

After successfully completing the design phase for the £15.5m project a UK company has confirmed it to move forward with plans to develop a highly efficiency and "very long" wind turbine blade,

Isle of Wight-based Blade Dynamics announced yesterday that the so-called "Very Long Blade Project" undertaken on behalf of the government and industry-backed Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) would now enter the prototype phase with a view to testing the new 80 meter long blade before the end of next year.

Leading wind turbine manufacture Siemens also announced that it would continue to provide support for the project, which has been tailored to produce a blade for the company's SWT-6.0 turbine.

The new blades are expected to be both longer and lighter than conventional blades, and as such promise higher levels of efficiency.
